As an outgrowth of my interest in electronic calculators, I have begun some investigation into how preservice elementary teachers might benefit from classroom experience with some of the new elementary school calculators, specifically the TI-15 and TI-10 shown below from Texas Instruments.
In collaboration with Mary Schroth of the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center, I have presented a paper on my work with the TI-15, at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' 02002 annual meeting in Las Vegas, NV. A paper based on this presentation was published in the January 02005 New Jersey Mathematics Teacher. A laboratory manual containing these exercises has been published by Linus Publications--purchase a copy by clicking here.
In addition, Mary and I presented a paper on recursion with the TI-83--for all students, not just preservice teachers--at the 02003 NCTM national meeting in San Antonio, TX.
At the 02005 NCTM meeting in Anaheim,CA, Mary and I joined with Lindsay Noakes of the BCAMCS to conduct a workshop, "Using Original Research in an AP or Advanced Statistics Course". An HTML version of our presentation may be found here.
