Seven populations of prairie rose gentian in Illinois were studied for as many as 18 years to understand what environmental influences impact population numbers. Multiple least-squares regression, stepwise regression, weighted least-squares, zero-inflated models for count data and negative binomial regression were examined to determine the most appropriate statistical analysis. Years following disturbance, and spring precipitation were concluded to be significant predictors of the number of plants occurring in the growing season.
