Discussion Questions for TOS, Ch. 9-10

1. On page 282, it talks about how extinction is a faster process than the creation of a species.  This makes sense to me, but it made me imagine Jurassic Park where the rate if production was sped up thanks to technology. Will humans one day create new species? Will it be at a rate faster than extinction?

2. What are we really losing by not having a perfect geological record? Do we really need the fossils of every intermediate link?

3. On page 275, the history of the world/the geological record is written about using book terminology. Is this a helpful way to picture history? How does this compare to compressing the history of the universe into a single year or human life?

4. How has all the geology and paleontology since Darwin's day affected our view of the quality of the fossil record?

5. Darwin goes back and restates or changes what he said many times. Do you think this makes things harder to understand? Or does it make his theory harder to believe?

6. Darwin speculates that the geologic record is not complete because all the fossils for species between documented ones have not been found. Is there any great scientific discovery that could be made with the findings of these fossils? Or do you think they will ever be found?
